Holy Season of Moura

From the Matriarch of the Janite Deanic Ekklasia, ArchMadria (Bishop) Pamela.

Sunday 1 Moura/Feb. 21

Today marks the beginning of our penitential season which is the Fifth Season of the Deanic calendar. Both the Season and the one month of this Season is called Moura which means dark.

~

The idea of a lenten season did not originate with Christianity, rather it originated with the Romans during the Classical Pagan era. For Janites, this is not a time of ‘giving something up’ or conducting ascetic practices, rather it is a time of somber reflection and contemplation. We keep in mind both the Descent of Holy Daughter and we revere the Great Mother, Who is the Dark beyond the light and the Light beyond the Darkness. We spend extra time in prayer, meditation, scripture reading, contemplation (I am still in the process of transposing the rest of the scriptures online), volunteer work, helping others, etc.

~

The altar cloth and the two main altar candles should be purple. (The five candles of the cardinal directions may be white.) The accent colors may be indigo and black except for the Feast Days of Madria Candra and Madria Theia. (Instructions will be given on those days.) For our clergy, our tradition is to wear the accenting colors for the veil/shawl for females and religious hat/sash for men. So, for example, during Moura, female clergy will wear a white dress or robes with an indigo or black shawl and veil/scarf. Male clergy will wear white robes with an indigo or black cap/beret and sash (the sash is worn over the left shoulder and beneath the right arm.)

~

For those who choose to wear the pendant or pin of the Season, the Sacred Symbol for Moura is the Fora. A Fora is a solar cross with the rays extending beyond the circle and it is the main symbol of the Deanic religion.

~

For Janites, this Season represents the time during which we remember the Descent of the Holy Daughter down through the Seven Realms in the manner of Holy Sophia. This is a somber time of year as it is stated in Sophian mythology that the Descent caused Her suffering as She left the higher, rarefied. Light-filled vibrational realms and descended downwards to a lower, denser, darker frequency.

~

In our Tradition, we believe that when we chose to enter manifest creation, the Light of the Celestial Mother became too bright for us to look upon and so the Holy Daughter, Who emanates from the Celestial Mother, Descended in Her Gentler Light, down through the Realms, in order to become the Holy Soul of the World. (We will be speaking more about the doctrine of the Holy Soul on the Feast of the Dove, 1 Columbina/March 21.) This is why we speak of the Celestial Mother as being the Supernal Sun and the Holy Daughter as being the Supernal Moon. (Supernal means Heavenly, Celestial or Cosmic).

~

On the night of the Full Fora Moon, which happens to be tomorrow night, devotees may perform the Lustration Rite which may take the form of a ritual bath or they may ritually wash their hands and face. After the bath or ritual washing, they will bless their hands and forehead with holy water, purify their hands in the smoke of incense and anoint their hands and their forehead with holy oil. The blessing, purification and anointing will eventually be offered in temple or chapel.

This is also the Season of the Great Mother, Who, as Absolute Deity, is known as the Veiled Origin of Eternity. She is also known, in the Janite Tradition of the Deanic religion, as the Veiled Fora of Faith.  The Tradition which we inherited does not treat of the Great Mother as a Kali-like figure. We understand Her from a more Western standpoint. Though She is Absolute Deity, we do not believe that She is completely unknowable and She certainly is not dangerous as some might have us believe! She is our Great Mother, after all! She is the Source of All Life! Great Mother may also translate as Grand-Mother! Though Her Light is Dark, it is a Shimmering, Bright, Luminescent, Velvety Dark Light similar to that which has been encountered by those who have had Near Death Experiences.

~

In many Christian denominations, God the Father is considered to be Absolute Deity and yet, He is not entirely unknowable as the Son has revealed Him. So, in the Deanic Faith, we may know of the Great Mother, Dea Matrona, through the Celestial Mother and the Holy Daughter. They are One, after all.

~

Finally, it is also the Season of the Janati of the Three-Fold Heaven, Madria Candra, Madria Theia and Madria Rhaya. These three Janati represent the Trinity; Madria Candra represents the Holy Daughter, Madria Theia represents the Celestial Mother and Madria Rhaya represents the Great Mother.

~

The Feast Days for this month are:

1 Moura/Feb. 20: the Feast of Lady Rhaya.

14 Moura/March 5 or March 4 if it is a leap year): Med-Moura.  Feast of Lady Theia.

23  Moura/March 14. Feast of Lady Candra.

28 Moura/March 19 (18 in a leap year): The Feast of the Fora: Our Lady  as the Life and Veiled Origin of Eternity, Dark beyond the light and the Light beyond the Darkness.

March 20 or March 19 and 20 if a not a leap year: Hiatus.

~

During this solemn season, we will be posting devotional articles and passages from scripture.

Let us spend this time in self-reflection and examination. Let us pray that Dea will help us to be faithful to our individual Soul Path and may we always remember that our every act is a choice which either leads us closer to or further away from Dea, Our Divine Mother.
