The Need For Light

I have created my own sort of Astrean Sunwheel for this season. I was not able to buy a wreath or the materials to make one, so I chose to cut a circle out of paper and stick it on my wall next to my altar. I have also created five “candles” out of paper that I will stick on the Sunwheel on the appropriate day.

Today, the first Sunnadi of the Astrean Season, we light a green candle for wisdom.

ArchMadria posted the Scripture readings for this candle lighting and I read them aloud to myself as I stuck my first “candle” on the wall next to my altar. One of them in particular resonated with a recent train of thought of mine:

18. Light is pure force or delight. It is the joy of Thea, and Her breath and spirit. 19. Light is the outpouring of life into existence. All things that exist come from life; they are made and sustained by light. -The Crystal Tablet 18-19

It is my understanding that the reason why many cultures and religions have celebrations and holidays around midwinter is to cheer the human spirit in these (literally) dark times. Although I have depression all the time, it is particularly exacerbated by dark weather. Of course this time of year is darker as the hours of daylight are shorter, but I live in the Pacific Northwest and it rains all. the. time. During the past two months there has been only five rain-free days. Calling it “depressing” would be an understatement from my perspective.

So when I read that “light is pure…delight,” I immediately take that in the most literal of senses. Everyday I am keenly aware of the fact that “all things that exist come from life” and that “they are made and sustained by light.” Including me.

In these days I long for the Solstice and the promise of longer days. I long for the Spring and the cessation of this rain. I long for the day when I will be able to move to a less rainy climate.

But here and now I attempt to acknowledge my need for Light, to grieve its loss and maintain hope for its return, and to turn my mind to the spiritual truths that these natural realities reflect. In her recent post on Winter, ArchMadria Pamela wrote:

During Astrea, the Holy Daughter first appears as our Star of Hope, She Who enfolds us within Her Soul and guides us back to Our Celestial Mother. Though we may feel, at times, like we are plunging and flailing beneath the depths of turbulent, inky seas, She uplifts us and shows us the way back to safe shores and the comforting light of home. So united with us is She, that there is nothing we experience that She does not experience with us, nothing within us that She does not understand. She sails those seas with us and is with us every moment of each day. -ArchMadria Pamela Lanides

It is of great comfort to me to know that Dea knows my distress during these dark days because She feels it with me. She feels the wet, cold, dark, grey, grey, grey days that seem never ending.

But She also remind me of the fact that they will end. That She comes forth to bring us back to Dea Madria. That this journey through the darkness is a journey towards light, towards life, towards Her.

A very Happy Astrean Season to you all!

Dea Bless!❤

Sophia Ruth’s comment:

Thealogy of Rain – Especially Constant Heavy

Hello Jacqueline,
Happy Sacred Month of Astrea Sunwheel Ritual Time (Astrean Season).

On the surface, I responded to your article with “hmm, last year I looked at an internet image of the appropriate candle for the Sunwheel rituals. I wish that I had thought of creating a paper one!”

At the deeper Spiritual level, I thought what is the thea/o logy of heavy, constant rain.
1. Darkness, cold, constant rain is the opposite to Madria Dea – supernal Sun, warm and light.
2. We have an expression in England: “it is sheeting it down!” – meaning a bed sheet obscuring the sun. This directly relates to the Scripture: Title 3, Chapter 7, The Veil of Matter, Verse 11. For matter is like to a veil that darkens the eyes, giving them to see only a little part of the things that lie about them.
3. Hindu / Vedic people believe that Rains are associated with the three primary process of existence, namely creation, preservation, and dissolution. (The Deanic Werdes/Moiras). Water is symbolically the element of Life.
4. Hindu / Vedic people believe that a rain drop that falls from the heavens is compared to the individual soul that enters the phenomenal world to become an embodied soul. The Vedas do declare that the souls that go to the ancestral world at the time of their death, (The Filianic Avala / Deanic Abalon/Avalon), return to the earth after their karmas through rains to take rebirth. (The Deanic Moira/fate, Hindu karma/dharma).

Feast of Lady Sofia – From Under The Violet Moon Blog

Reblogged from

Feast of Lady Sofia

Today, the first of Astrea, is Lady Sofia’s feast day. I have never marked a Jana’s feast day before so I didn’t really know what to do except I spent some time reflecting on my relationship with Lady Sofia in my journal and praying to Her.

I was drawn to Lady Sofia before I ever encountered Déanism. I first met Her in the Book of Proverbs in the Hebrew Bible as a child and She made quite an impression on me.

“Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out:
‘To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. O simple ones, learn prudence; acquire intelligence, you who lack it.Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right; for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them. They are all straight to one who understands and right to those who find knowledge.Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold; for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.’”

-Book of Proverbs 8:1-11 (NRSV)

In high school we were given the assignment of writing a poem to a personification, so I chose to write to Lady Wisdom. In university I had the opportunity to take a seminar on women in the Hebrew Bible and I chose to focus on Chokmah (Wisdom). The paper that resulted from my studies in the class is one of the most enjoyable papers I’ve ever written.

As I think back over my early attraction to Lady Sofia, I think that I was drawn to Her because She was the only real example of the Divine Feminine that I had access to at that time. I was Protestant and so the Virgin Mary was only a distant and small biblical figure to me, and God was presented in wholly masculine terms -I never even heard the Holy Spirit spoken of as feminine, even though there is certainly a traditional basis for such an interpretation. The Spirit was always a “He” or sometimes an impersonal “it.”

Even behind my fascination with Lady Wisdom I felt a bit guilty whenever I entertained the idea of Her as a Person rather than an abstract concept. But the language of Proverbs made Her sound so very person-like and I was inextricably drawn to such a portrayal:

“The LORD created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth…When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep…I was beside him, like a master worker, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race.” -Book of Proverbs 8:22-31 (NRSV)

Lady Sofia was the first aspect of the Divine Feminine that I ever specifically encountered, and so She holds a special place in my heart.

The Janite Order has the following written for Lady Sofia on their page for The Seven Jeweled Rays:

“I am Sofia, the Yellow Ray of Wisdom. I am the Memory of the All.

The Four-Fold Earth is where I reign and it is Air that I guard.

Come to me when you are in need of a muse and I will channel my words through you.

Learn of me the Topaz Jewels of Intelligence and Intuition and I will make of you a sage.

Depend upon me and I shall entrust to you the Key which opens the door to all Mystery.

Trust in me and I will grant you the True Gnosis which shall lead you unto your Sacred Moment.

I am Sofia.”

Praise be to Sofia! Dea Bless❤

ArchMadria Pamela Lanides – Janite  Order

Lunadi, 1 Astrea, is the first day of the Sacred Season of Winter
and it is also the Feast of Madria Sofia.

Our five Seasons are considered to be sacred because each of them encapsulates one of our Five Main Mysteries and so, we enter each Season with deep devotion and humble joy.

The Sacred Season of Winter marks the beginning of the Daughter time of year beginning with the Mystery of the Nativity. It is the time when we are guided by the North Star, the Sacred Symbol of Winter. (More on the North Star to come.) The Holy Daughter, Dea Filia, is both the Star of Hope and the Midnight Star of Wonder.

The darkest nights of Winter are a time of great hope and beauty. When better, can we see that fantastic display of starlight flashing against the velvet backdrop of space?

When other, (depending upon where one lives), are we able to witness the varied-colored display of the Aurora, the northern and southern lights?

Here in the North, we experience a time of stillness, of quietness when the snow-pack covers the ground. In the South, it is a time when the harshness of the summer heat retreats and soft winter breezes stream through the land.

Winter is a time of introspection and relative rest for our souls, if we allow it to be so. We are able to take a step back and relax in the surety of our Faith, knowing that we are accomplishing Dea’s Sovereign Will in our daily lives. Let us take time for meditation and contemplation as we sit by our hearths or enjoy the beauty of Nature.

Madria Erin – Independent Filianic Priestess

Tomorrow is the first day of the Deanic month of Astraea, meaning Star Maiden. It’s also the first day of the Deanic season of Winter.
The correspondence of the stars to the winter makes a lot of sense to me.
Just as sailors in the days before our advanced navigational technology would use the North Star to guide them to safety, the Holy Daughter is our guide to safety. As we sail on the ocean of the universe, we can often feel lost and overwhelmed. But we turn our heads to the sky, and She is there to guide us home.
We decorate our homes with little lights that look like stars. After a long day of work in the winter, when the bus is late, when you’re freezing, wet, hungry and tired, you still know you have a warm, inviting home lit up with lights waiting for you. As does our Mother have a heavenly home lit up with lights prepared for us.
When we look up at the nights sky, we often forget that we are looking at suns. They are obviously much further away, which is why they seem tiny compared to the miraculous golden orb that lights our day times, but they are still suns. On a clear night, when you look at the night sky and see stars, you are in fact looking at thousands and thousands of far away suns. No matter how dark things seem, the universe is full of light, and this world is full of goodness. It is full of kind, selfless, courageous, wonderful people. It is full of miraculous beauty. And although clouds may hide the stars from our sight sometimes, they remain.

Starday / Wednesday – honours the Holy Daughter as the Love and Divine Soul Form of the World. Diva Jana is the Star of Hope.
Starday is presided over by Lady Sofia of the Fourfold Earth and is the Guardian of North and Air. The season of Winter.
I will strive to emulate Lady Sofia in Intelligence, Intuition and Wisdom.

For my predecessors in the Deanic Faith this month was also named Astraea (Latin)
which has been modernised to Astrea

Astraea or Astrea (Ancient Greek: Ἀστραῖα;[1] “star-maiden”), in ancient Greek religion, was a daughter of Astraeus and Eos. She was the virgin goddess of innocence and purity and is always associated with the Greek goddess of justice, Dike (daughter of Zeus and Themis and the personification of just judgement). She is not to be confused with Asteria, the goddess of the stars and the daughter of Coeus and Phoebe.

Astraea, the celestial virgin, was the last of the immortals to live with humans during the Golden Age, one of the old Greek religion’s five deteriorating Ages of Man.[2] According to Ovid, Astraea abandoned the earth during the Iron Age.[3] Fleeing from the new wickedness of humanity, she ascended to heaven to become the constellation Virgo. The nearby constellation Libra reflected her symbolic association with Dike, who in Latin culture as Justitia is said to preside over the constellation. In the Tarot, the 8th card, Justice, with a figure of Justitia, can thus be considered related to the figure of Astraea on historical iconographic grounds.

According to legend, Astraea will one day come back to Earth, bringing with her the return of the utopian Golden Age of which she was the ambassador.

The first candle to be lit is the Green candle of Wisdom. This candle represents the First Mystery of the Celestial Mother, Mari; She Who is the Creatrix and Matrix of all Being. She is Supernal Wisdom. (Mari is pronounced: Mar as in Mars, i as in ee. The emphasis is on the first syllable.)

The Green candle of Wisdom is also representative of Fall, West, Earth, Twilight, the Apple of Wisdom and Madria Thema.

The candle is lit before dinner or early evening, followed by a the brief scripture reading and prayers on Sunnadi. We will continue to light the Green candle each evening of the week, although the same scripture reading and prayers are not necessary. A devotee may say a brief prayer, in their own words, for the candle lighting during the remainder of the week. The candle is extinguished after the evening meal.

Title 3, Chapter 5, The Sermon of the Apple Seed

1. From the branch of a tree Kore plucked an apple, and She split the apple in two halves, so that the five-pointed star formed by its seeds might be seen. 2. Then She removed the seed representing the topmost point, and held it in the palm of Her hand. And She spoke, saying:

3. “Like to this apple seed is all the teaching I have given and shall give to you. 4. Like to the full apple is all the knowledge relative to your sphere of being, 5. Like to all the other apples of the tree is the knowledge relative to all the numberless spheres.

6. But behind these spheres lies a deeper reality; changeless, beyond the impermanent flux of time. 7. For even as the apple turns from bud to bloom, from blossom to the fruit, ripens, matures, decays and is reborn; 8. so also shall the spheres and galaxies, the subtle realms, the sure and solid earth; so shall all these in their season pass away, and in their season be reborn again. 9. Thus has it been ten thousand times before, and countless times again, thus shall it be.

The Thoughts of the Mind

Verse 10 restored thanks to Mr David Kay – Madrian

1. Thoughts of the mind neither pass away, nor vanish into air.  2. For every thought is a builder in the subtle world that lies about you.  3. Thoughts of beauty and of things of the Spirit refine and purify the soul, making her fair to look upon and graceful in her movements, 4. uniting
her with the universal music of eternity and gathering about her the servants of the archangels.
5. But harsh thoughts harden the soul; coarse thoughts coarsen the soul; thoughts bound only to material things load the soul with heavy chains. 6. My children, I speak not in pictures, for truly these things are real and to be seen by all whose eyes can penetrate the veil of illusion.  7. What maiden, receiving from her mother a fine and well-made house of well-wrought oak and stone and furnished by the skillful hand of love, will break the walls and furnishings, pour filthy waters in every place and bring swine to dwell in the most splendid chambers?  8. Will she not rather bring new things of beauty and precious works of love to add to those that lie already there?  9. Will she not keep away all dirt and defilement and protect it from all damage? 10. Why, then, does a soul, dwelling in the house of her subtle body, defile that glorious dwelling with vile and lowly thoughts, break its noble furnishings with chains of matter and of the ego, and invite keres and hateful demons to dwell within its walls?

11. Does she not know that the thoughts of her mind neither pass away nor vanish into air?  12. Does she not know that every thought of greed, of hate, of lust or of
anger is a scar upon her subtle body?  13. Does she not see that she surrounds herself with hateful things that are the forms of her thoughts?  14. Does she not see
that evil demons harbour in these forms even as rats infest a dunghill?  15. Does she not know that when her mortal body is passed into
the earth she will have no place to dwell except in that subtle body her thoughts have so distorted, and among the forms of her creation?

16. Let the soul rather fill her dwelling with the warmth of love and generosity, with the sweet, cool air of purity, and with the flowers of
simplicity, humility and gentleness.  17. Let her garden flow with the fountains of virtue and lie open to the sunlight of our Mother’s love.
18. Let the soul lie only open and the sunlight will stream in, filling her with joy, warmth and beauty; for truly your Mother loves you and delights in giving Her grace.
19. Then be not bound by the world of matter, but turn your thoughts upon eternity, and the path of light shall be made clear.  20. Forget not the power of words, for a word has all the power of a thought, and a thought has power to move the earth and the heavens.  21. Therefore do not speak evil in idleness, or fall into the custom of ill-speaking, but govern your words even as your actions.  22. Speak words of love and innocence, of mildness and of hope, and you shall weave a raiment of peace about your soul, and a veil of gentle light.  23. Speak prayers often, speak them
in the rhythm of your steps, and attune them to the beating of your heart.
24. For She who governs the endless ages governs also the hour of every action. Let your voice call on Her in pure simplicity, for She is the Lady of the noontide and the Lady of the night, the Lady of the mountain and the valley.
25. Truly, the world is a field of conflict between the powers of good and the legions of Irkalla. The conflict is manifest in the cycles of civilizations, and also in the soul of every maid.
26. For the servants of Irkalla fasten upon the false self, like the bindweed fastens upon a growing plant. And the radiant angels of heaven stand ready to defend the soul when she shall cry upon them.
27. Truly, there is nothing in the world of matter that happens by itself, for the veil of matter is shot through with the light of the real and
the darkness of the false.
28. Not even a sparrow touches down up on a twig without showing forth the conflict between evil and the good. No grain of sand shifts in the desert without reflecting some spiritual truth.  29. Not even a star falls in the farthest corner of the universe
without an inward meaning.  30. What then is the wisdom of this world, which knows the outward shows of things but not their inward truth?  31. The wisdom of the world is good for the world, but what when the world
shall pass away?  32. If the navigator can no longer use her legs, how shall she fare when her vessel is cast upon the shore?
33.  Look without and you shall see within; look within and you shall see without.  34. For I am the inwardness of all things: 35. I am between the ripple and the water; I am between the dancer and the dance; I am between the breathing and the breath; between the lightest word of greeting and the thought from which it flows. 36. You have stripped away layer after layer of the world to search for Me, and have found nothing at the centre; but I was between each layer and every other.  37. Break in two an apple seed and seek to find the tree that shall grow from it. You shall find nothing. Yet the essence of the tree is in the seed. Even so am I in all
things.

Notes:

My favourite chapter of Madrian Scripture from when I was awakened to the Filianic / Deanic faith.
Verse 14: “Demons,” or “Keres.”
Verse 25: Irkalla is the dark queen. The opposite to Mother God personified, who will be transformed and reunited with Dea.

Filianic Advent Candles!

From http://filianism-deanism.blogspot.co.uk/2016/11/advent-candles.html

Rebekah aka River S – Independent Filianic

I said it already on my stitching blog, but here it is again – it has been Yuletide since November 1st for me. I woke up the morning after Halloween, and everything said “Yuletide”: the weather, the anticipation already starting to crackle in the air, the early posts on social media or the music in stores – I have been happily enjoying the festive season nearly a full month now!

So to bring this winter-y feeling more fully into view, I decided this would be the year we had advent candles. This year found me with a lot of candles on hand from fantastic finds in local thrift stores, so I had some to choose from right away; my Mother has plenty of candle holders on hand and a new runner for the mantelpiece; and my sister’s birthday celebrations yesterday took us to a Michael’s store where I picked up two frosty branches to finish off the setting. It turned out beautifully!!

The traditional colours for Advent candles are several: all purple, all blue, all white, or three purple/blue and one pink, some with a white candle in the middle. Each candle has meanings depending on the colour, when they are lit in the Advent season, and where they are in the wreath; and most of these meanings change depending on the church and denomination lighting them. They were in use with pre-Christian Germanic peoples, and became incorporated with the Christian church by 1600.

For me, I didn’t have any blue or purple candles, but I did have lovely white tapers, a handful of pink – and a beautiful gold. I like the meanings of hope, love, joy, and peace for each of them, with the gold candle on Nativity for the birth of the Daughter. I’ll probably light them from the outside first – hope and peace on the white – then love and joy on the pink in the middle as the last two Mondays of Advent so I work my way in towards the Daughter candle for Nativity.

Advent begins next week – one candle a week for the four weeks leading up to Christmas. I checked the Calendar over on Google Calendars, courtesy of Race MoChridhe, and in the Daughters of Shining Harmony, and the weeks this year do indeed begin on Mondays, or Candredi for Sai Candre, so one candle will be lit in the evening on Monday next week, the first of Astraea, around dinner time; then two the following Monday, etc. The gold candle will be lit on the eve of Nativity, as the light of the Daughter is born.

I will be eagerly looking forward to the promised posts on Nativity and Advent practices on the Janite Order’s blog, and – once I get the last of my homework out of the way (just two classes in the term left!) – working on the prayers and readings I will have during this season!

Until the first night of Advent, I do have some more Scripture images in the works: the cover images for each of the chapters of the Minor Scriptures are nearly finished, and I’ve begun some work with the actual verses; look to see those posted soon on Facebook; and then there are images to create for the holiday season as well, which I can hardly wait to get started on!

Hope to see you soon!
