28 Astrea/December 25: Feast of the Star Maiden

To our Christian members and friends, we wish you a Merry Christmas.

To our Jewish members and friends, we wish you an Happy Hanukkah.

To our Filianic friends, we wish you an Holy Nativity.

To our Deanic members and friends, we wish you an Happy Feast of the Star Maiden

https://deanic.com/2016/12/25/greetings-to-all/

The star fairy is Princess of the air sylphs/can be a representative of Janya Lady Sofia ultimately Dea, Herself.
Spiritually the star fairy, brings Joy of Dea on earth and spiritual gifts. It is usual to offer good intentions to her.
~
 From Sorella Sophia:
“I also wrote a short note of good deeds and intentions which was held above the hearth fire and the updraft carried it up the the Star Fairy (Dea). Etymology: cheminée (chimney) is closely related to chemin (way or road). The chimney in the house is like the fontanelle in the head (the opening we have as babies that symbolically opens up to heaven) or the sun-door in the universe which is the way out of the material world to the higher realms”
~
Therefore the Deanic/Filianic tradition of the Star-Fairy was a continuation with added religious significance, the Divine Spirit entering the World through the Northern Portal.
~
This can be, in a more secular viewpoint, a bringing of material gifts for the children, like Santa Claus.

28 Astraea/December 26: Filiadies: God With Us

From https://underthevioletmoon.wordpress.com/2016/12/26/filiadies-god-with-us/

225c6a5d469ff16672133b95b52b0929

Today marks the first day of the Nativity. Some of us Déanists on Tumblr have taken to calling the holiday Filiadi, which is literally “Daughter’s Day” in Latin (after the Janite usage of “Daughter’s Day,” although theirs is on 25 Astraea), or Filiadies, “Daughter’s Days,” for those of us who celebrate the holiday over a period of twelve days.

I photographed my altar last night after putting up my final, red candle to mark the completion of the Astraean Season.

My thealogy is not completely developed, but I definitely view this holiday as a celebration of Dea being with us. Dea as Mother is a comforting and loving, beautiful face to be sure, but the face She wears to us as the Maid is a bit different. Anna feels to me more like a loving friend, this is Dea come down to our level, so to speak. She is literally God with and within us.

Yesterday I found myself singing a song I learned at church as a young child, but I replaced Jesus’ name in the song with Anna’s so that the words became: “Anna is all the world to me/My life, my joy, my all/She is my strength from day to day/Without Her I would fall/When I am sad to Her I go/No other one can cheer me so/When I am sad She makes me glad/Oh She’s my friend.”

The simple, friendly picture the song paints touched me. Dea is a friend I have always with me, within me. The wonder of this holiday, at least to me right now, is that God is experiencing my life alongside me. It’s mind boggling.

I’ve been in therapy for a long time for depression and other mental illnesses, and I’ve been working for a while at trying to help myself sit with difficult emotions, to embrace everything that I’m feeling and not numb myself or push it away when it’s uncomfortable. I had something of an epiphany several weeks ago wherein I realized that in allowing myself to truly feel my feelings and be present with all my experiences, I am actually honouring Dea. Not just because She created me to be a feeling creature, but because She’s in me, because there’s a certain sense in which She is me, and when I cut myself off from my own self I am turning away from Dea. In not honouring my whole, true self, I am not honouring Her.

God knows the aches and the pain and the exhaustion I feel. She understands and affirms my tears. She is with me even as my depression makes it hard enough to be a person, never mind celebrate anything.

I am often prone to feeling so alone. I don’t think anything can replace human contact and connection, but knowing that Dea is with me in such a personal sense gives me a radically different perspective on my loneliness.

For me, today and the next eleven days are the Filiadies; they are the Daughter Days. They are the days when I will take the opportunity to be reminded that Dea as Daughter, Dea with us, Her Spirit, is ever in me, and I will never be alone or abandoned.

I wish everyone warm and peaceful holidays. Dea Bless!❤

Sunwheel – The Red Candle of Joy – Mother’s Night

From https://deanic.com/2016/12/20/mothers-nightred-candle-of-joy/

ArchMadria Pamela Lanides

Tonight is Mother’s Night, a native European Tradition as well as a Christian Tradition (when it was moved to Christmas Eve.) How appropriate that the candle of the Celestial Mother, as the Rose of Joy, be lit on this night, the night of Her Joy, the night of our Joy.

Tonight, on the eve of the solstice, the Daughter of Light, She Who is the Daughter of the Supernal Sun, will shine as the Midnight Star of Wonder;  the Star of Hope.

As we wait with the Holy Mother, we might offer Her incense and flowers, milk and honey, a rosary, hymns, special prayers or the Rite of Sacrifice (priestesses shall also serve the liturgy on Daughter’s Day/Yule). We also light the last candle on our Sunwheel.

The Red Candle also signifies the Sacred Season of Summer; the direction of South, the time of Noon, the Symbol of the Rose and Madria Vicka. The Sacred Mystery is Assumption. (The Holy Mother is the Assumption of our Souls when our incarnations are complete.)

Title 3, Chapter 3, The Mantle

1) You that are weary with the world, you that are lonely, you that have suffered hardship, that have suffered hurt, come, gather about Me and be enfolded in My Mantle.
2) In the inner silence you shall hear Me and in the inner darkness you shall see Me.
3)  And the future shall be better than the past.
4) Come, seek protection in My mantle, for I have turned no creature from Me; be sheltered in the folds of My garment.
5) For the ills of the world shall pass away, even as the terrors of the night.
6) And the dawn shall be bright with splendor and sweet with the singing of the blessed souls.
7) And I shall be your comfort in the darkness.

Title 1, Chapter 2, The Mythos of the Divine Maid

20. The archangel at the cave’s mouth called forth the children of the earth that they might present their gifts. And the three great princesses of the earth came forward: 21. First the greatest of them, who ruled more land than either of the others and also possessed more treasure. 22. Her crown was of pure gold; and as she took it from her head, the light of the star fell upon it, and it shone with a glister lovelier than any earthly jewel. 23. And she laid it at the feet of the archangel. 24. The archangel said: “It is good that you bring your crown, for you are a great princess, but the holy child shall be princess of all the world.”

25. The second princess held neither so much land nor treasure, but she was a maid of deep wisdom and profound meditation. Her crown was of pure silver; and as she took it from her head, the light of the star fell upon it, and it shone with a radiance yet lovelier than that of the golden crown. 26. And she laid it at the feet of the archangel. 27. The archangel said: “It is good that you bring your crown, for you have great wisdom, but the holy child is the daughter of wisdom herself.”

28. The last princess possessed only but few of the worldly things, but she was a priestess of Thea, and she praised Her in the morning and at evening and at all the seven hours of the day. Her crown was made from glittering crystal; and as she took it from her head the light of the star fell upon it, and she was bathed in rays of a thousand different colours, and the children of the earth drew in their breath at the sight of its beauty. 29 And she laid it at the feet of the archangel. 30. The archangel said: “It is good that you bring your crown, for you are a true and loving priestess and a servant of your people, but the holy child shall be priestess of all the world, and shall serve Her children even to the last and greatest service.”

31. When the archangel ceased to speak, a new voice filled the air, more beautiful and more formidable than hers. The voice said:

“Her name shall be called Kore,
for She shall be the Lady of heaven.”

32. Then the star vanished from the sky and yet its light remained; then the shape of the light became a vision: 33. it was a vision of the Mistress of All Things, bearing in Her arms the holy child. 34. For all the wondrous things the children of earth had seen that night, not the whole of them was one thousandth part as wondrous as this vision.

35. Then for twelve nights the star returned to the sky; and on the thirteenth night it did not return. And this was a sign of things that were to come.

Guiding Star of Hope, Midnight Star of Wonder

8 point Northern Star of Hope & 5 point Pentagram Star of Wonder

Guiding Star of Hope

Dea Filia or Daughter God is the (North) Guiding Star of Hope.
As the Star of Hope, the Holy Daughter comes to us as our Soteria (Saviouress in that She is here with us, gives us our souls and guides us back to the Divine Mother).
The Northern Star is a symbol for North, which is the corresponding direction for Winter in the Deanic Faith.

When I compare the sun symbol shape to the Northern Star – visually it is emanation.

north-star northern-star-in-lights

The Holy Daughter is said to have been born of (She emanates from) the Holy Mother during Winter at Midnight in our Cosmic Drama. The Sacred Time for Winter, according to our correspondences, is Midnight. The Northern Star is also sometimes known as the Midnight Star.Sailors use the Northern Star to navigate the often-times treacherous seas of the northern hemisphere, it was the Guiding Star home, just as the Holy Daughter, the Great Dove of the Waters, guides us back to the Celestial Mother and to the Supernal Realm which is our True Home. Our Lady is known as Stella Maris, Star of the Sea. The Star itself was once known as Stella Mars (Star of the Sea).stella-maris-blue

The North Star became a symbol for finding your way home safely and symbolically finding your way in life. But beyond that, as many sailors were deeply superstitious with a rich history of lore about life and death at sea, they were always looking for lucky charms. So many sailors began to place nautical star tattoos on their forearms or hands as a symbol of good luck and a desire to get home safely.
Skip forward through the centuries and the meaning of the nautical star tattoo has become broader. Not only is it a symbol of the sea, but also a sign of security and guidance for all sailors and travelers. It has also become a sign of following your dreams and achieving success in your life.

The Northern Star, or Polaris, also appears to ‘stand still’ in the sky, while all the other stars revolving around it just as the Janati and all hosts of Heaven surround Our Lady. It is a ‘fixed’ point in the sky, a constant companion for setting one’s course just as the Holy Daughter is ever with us to guide us on our own Soul Path.

This star was also sacred to the Greeks, Egyptians and other ancient world cultures.

Midnight Star of Wonder

I have a personal difference to Janite thealogy.
Our predecessors in the Madrian Faith used the upright pentagram which probably arose from studying Pythagoras.

I view the upright pentagram (5 pointed star) as the Midnight Star of Wonder, the “epiphany” star announcing the presence of the Holy Daughter in the manifest planes.

The ArchMadria and majority within the Janite Tradition have taken the decision that the upright pentagram (5 pointed star) has been adopted by Wicca and neo-Paganism faiths as their main symbol. Also despite the fact that the pentagram was used in early Christianity, it is still associated with evil, unfortunately.

Therefore the guiding Northern Star is more appropriate.

Title 1, Chapter 4, The Holy Mythos
(
Chapters 4-7 known as  The Daughter born to accepting the fate )
Also known as Chapter 1, The Mythos of the Divine Maid

4. Those that were princesses among them brought their crowns to the sacred grove as gifts, and shepherdesses brought the new-dropped lambs, and all the daughters of the earth brought forth the fruits thereof to lay before the cave. 5. But before the cave stood an archangel of Thea, robed in a garment so white that the eyes of earth’s children were dazzled, and with a countenance of such great beauty that it was a fearful thing to look upon her. 6. And the daughters of the earth covered their eyes and threw themselves to the ground. 7. And the voice of the archangel was like to the rushing of a thousand waters. 8. And she spoke, saying: “Be not afraid, for a new light is dawning over the world. Be not afraid, but approach no further, for if you cannot look on me, how should you look upon my Lady, whose handmaiden I am?”

9. And her voice grew gentle, like the wind among the icicles, and sweet beyond all telling. 10. Then she spoke, saying: “This night shall a child be born that shall be the daughter of light and the princess of all the world. 11. A child is coming that she shall carry the light of Thea into every part of creation, even to the most desolate of the places of darkness. 12. Rejoice, poor wanderers of the earth and exiles from the house of your Mother, for to you shall come a guide and a deliverer.”

13. When the voice of the archangel ceased, a silence fell that was the first true silence since the beginning of the world, and the last that shall be until its end, 14. and the children of earth watched the sky as the first rays of dawn crept across the heavens. 15. Then a cry issued out of the cave, saying: “The holy child is born from the most holy Mother; light has come forth from light, perfection from perfection.” 16. At once the air was filled with the daughters of heaven, and the sky was ablaze with the radiance of their joy, 17. and they sang aloud to the glory of Thea. 18. When the shining ones ceased from their song, the world became quiet again, and the star grew brighter and ever brighter, until it shone brighter than the radiance of all the host of heaven; and yet its light was so gentle that the eyes of earth’s children were not dazzled, 19. and the colour of the light was not one of the seven, but a wondrous luminescence not known within the boundaries of the world.

My Beautiful White Dove

My favorite and most beautiful bird is the beautiful white Dove
Representing Heaven and God’s love from above
The white dove represents peace and unity
When I see it flying I feel happy and free
When the dove returned with an olive branch
…proving that land had been found
Such a beautiful, intelligent bird that descends from Heaven
…watching over man treading the ground
Doves are full of love, peace, grace and sacrifice
They represent kindness, happiness and being nice
A Dove have the eyes to see the best in people
…and a heart that forgives
It has the mind to forgive the worst, forget the bad,
…and a little bird soul that prays for you to live
That beautiful white Dove will NEVER lose faith in God above
Thank you beautiful white Dove for descending from Heaven
…and spreading your love
The deepest kind of peace and faith is represented by the Dove
It will quiet our trouble thoughts, renew our mind and spirit

Title 3, Chapter 3 The Mantle

PREPARATION FOR THE SACRIFICE

C:

Silver Star of the Waters, Who has fashioned all the world into being, beyond all knowing is the Splendour of Your Light. Enfold my spirit, within your Mighty Mantle and may the Pure Stream of Your Grace flow within me, in this world and in all the worlds to come. Blessed is She.

Madria Dea, we pray that You will Bless the gifts we bring to You, for we bring them not only in our own names, but for all who love You; may they be nourished and grow strong in Your true

Beloved Kyria, we bring these gifts for Your blessing in the name of Holy Ekklesia, who has gathered all of Your children into one Body, knowing no bounds of either time or space.

For we know that Ekklesia transcends this world, even as this sacred altar transcends the earthly stuff of which its parts are made. For we know that as we stand before this altar within Ekklesia, we stand at once before Your Celestial Altar, which is both in Heaven and in every place where Your children come together in Your Name.

C: Holds the sacrifice (bread) in the smoke of incense with both hands.

C: We know that there is but one Sacrifice made by all Your children in every place, eternally. Bless this gift, that we may take part in that one Sacrifice.

(All kneel on one knee. C bows her head.)

IOT ‘E VOH

THE SACRIFICE

C: Places Sacrifice back on plate. (May either be safely burned as an offering or placed outside on the ground.)

C: Mother of all that is, accept the gift Your children bring to You.

(All rise. C; lifts the Chalice in her left hand and traces the Fora over it with her right)

C: Let us offer libation to Dea.

(She dips two fingertips into the wine and sprinkles a few drops onto the sacrifice. The action is repeated three times. She then traces the Fora, again.)

C: Madria Dea, as we drink of the one cup, may Your Divine Spirit be infused within our being.

(The Chalice is passed to all. All drink. If a handmaid (server) is present, she serves them, afterwards drinking, herself. The celebrant drinks last.)

CONTEMPLATION (The celebrant may give food for contemplation, speak about the Mysteries of the season, spiritual truths, etc.)

C/H: Let us kneel before this altar that is both upon Earth and in the Heaven.

(All kneel except C and close eyes).

C: Let us consider that the earthly things we see about us are but illusion and that could we see with clearer eyes, a more glorious vision would appear before us.

Let us feel the Spirit of Dea, as it grows within us and seek to catch a glimpse of that vision.

(C kneels. During Contemplation, certain meditations may be spoken, including the following):

C: Great Dove of the Waters,

DISMISSAL

(C: traces the Fora three times, once at each blessing)

C: May the blessing of the Mother be upon you (we add: and upon this world.)

May the blessing of the Daughter be upon you and upon this world.

May the blessing of the Great Mother be upon you and upon this world.

Dark beyond the Light and Light beyond the Darkness.

C/H:

Beloved Kyria, we pray that you will bless us on our parting from Your Temple and infuse us with Your delight, so far as we are able to contain it.

SILVER LIGHT OF THE FORESTS

A:
Silver Light of the darkling forests, send us forth in the protection of Your Spirit that no profane thing may enter into us.

Grant us to see all things with delight that are lovely and to glory and increase in force and energy.

Fill us with wonder in the sight of the seas and of the heavens and of every place wherein You are.

Commander of the roaring wave, help us to turn from all that is low or inglorious neither with anger nor with pain, but to know that in You we stand above all such things.

Guiding Light of the faithful soul, fill the deepest caverns of our spirit with the exhilaration of Your love. Send us forth upon the world as torchbearers of Your delight and grant us strength in You and in ourselves that we may value all things rightly, regardless of the consuming weight of the profane and the frailty of all that is beautiful.

C: (Makes the sign of the Fora and says)

In the Name of the Mother

And of the Daughter

And of the Great Mother.

Blessed is She.

Let us bless the Queen of Heaven.

Blessed is She.

Let us thank the Seven Janati of Power.

Thanks be to the Seven Janati.

Thus may it remain.

    • We believe that like Sophia/Shekinah, the Holy Daughter suffered a Descent through the Realms in order to become the World Soul or Soul of the World, the Soul of humanity. By taking on rarefied Form, She becomes Soul. In giving Herself to us in this Earthly state of density and isolation, She, as the World Soul, becomes shattered. Thus, She represents the ultimate archetype of selfless sacrifice.

Just as the soul allows for the opposites of body and spirit to unite, so too does the Shekinah play this role for us.  Indeed, the Shekinah is the Soul of Man, what Kabbalists call the Neshamah, for She has given a portion of Herself in order for each human to come into being in this world.  In giving of Herself to humans, in this state of physical density and isolation, the World Soul becomes shattered. This shattering can be metaphorically grasped in considering what might happen to a glass alembic or flask when too much pressure is put upon in the alchemical works.  Thus, the Shekinah represents the ultimate archetype of selfless sacrifice.  All Her sacrifices have been for the benefit of creation so that humankind may experience this life in order to fulfill its destiny and purpose.

Apple Pomanders for the Holiday Season by Sorella Shoshana

Reblogged from

https://deanic.com/2016/12/15/the-star-fairy-and-apple-pomander-articles/

And from Sorella Shoshana, guest writer, we have this timely article on the spiritual symbolism of making an apple pomander. Though written for the Iremian Order of contemplative priestesses and sister-hood, I think it will be of interest to all.

Apple Pomanders for the Holiday Season

by Sorella Shoshana

I will be doing a series of posts on this pertaining to the Holidays. Since I am Jewish and Janite, I celebrate two Holidays combined, both dealing with the wonder and beauty of light. But, I will be focusing my articles more on the practices of the Janite faith. As many people are during this time of year; I am decorating, preparing a Holiday menu, and preparing gifts for friends and loved ones for the Holidays. This act alone can be a form of worship for the Iremian Order. A big part of this Order is that everything flows naturally. With every act, a simple prayer of thanks can be said.First, lets talk about apple pomander decorations together.

I prefer to make things and since I live with parrots who are sneaky little creatures who enjoy getting into everything, I use natural items around my home that are safe for them. I still have to be cautious, however. That’s life with parrots, I suppose.

As we make our apple pomanders, we can imagine the 5 pointed star in the middle when we cut through the wide center in the middle of the top and bottom of the apple (Don’t do this for making an apple pomander. But, we may if we’d like to see the star. I’d suggest later using the apple that has been cut into to eat, bake with, cut up to garnish some dish, or make homemade applesauce with afterwards) and what it represents. In the Janite Tradition, this star represents the Daughter’s gentle light, which we can look upon. Think of how we cannot look upon the sun easily. But, we can look at the moon without any problem. A gentler reflection of our sun’s light.

Within each seed is the stuff to make a tree, which makes an apple with seeds inside. Now, the tree’s roots can represent the Great Mother. She is unseen. The sturdy trunk is the Mother. The branches are like the realm of the soul/mind. Apples and leaves off of those branches are creation and within creation is the Daughter. She is NOT creation Herself. But, She is what lies within it. Within Her is Her Mother.

Many traditions use light in some form this time of year. This is due to the winter solstice being the shortest time of the year. As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, we need the hope that light will return. Now, lets not fool ourselves here. We know it will and the days WILL, in fact, get longer again. But, our world is an imperfect physical reflection of what is going on in other realms. Going off of the sun and moon analogy above, our physical existence is like the moon’s light upon the water…an imperfect reflection of the moon. We are constantly experiencing the same things in a cycle and these cycles occur at different lengths…..but, in a slightly different manner each time. Thus, a spiral becomes a better representation. This leads to how we can place our dried whole cloves along the apple.

unnamed-2  Photo by Sorella Shoshana

Start placing the cloves at the top. When we hang our pomanders, this should be the stillest part of the apple as it may occasionally spin once hung and if we choose not to hang them in this way, we can still see this analogy by holding the apple pomander up by the string or ribbon in our hand. The still center at the top and bottom of the apple is Dea. Now, place each clove spiraling out to the point that is furthest from Dea. This furthest point can also be creation or physical existence. Next, we will start to bring the spiral back inward, towards the bottom. This represents a return back to the stillness of Dea. Because the cloves are radiating out from the apple, it can be seen as radiating Dea’s light (the star seed in the middle of the apple) out into the world.

unnamed-3  Photo by Sorella Shoshana

Now, hang the apple pomander. I would suggest doing so in an area we may walk past often throughout the day. Every time we walk by and we smell the sweet smell of clove and apple, we will remember all this beautiful imagery. That sweet smell alone can represent the sweetness of our Mother’s Love. I liken this to flowers. They’re pretty similar in this way; a sweet beautiful item of creation reminding us of Her Love. All the beauty that we get to experience in this world are love letters to us from our Mother.

Another great place to hang them is right inside the main doorway to our homes. Our homes are supposed to be like our own sanctuaries. What a beautiful way to represent our homes being a sanctuary from the outside world by immediately smelling apple pomander once we enter our homes provoking such lovely imagery.

That’s it for now. There will be other posts on celebrating the Holidays for the Iremian Order.

Until next time. Dea Bless!

Filianic Advent Candles – 3rd Week!

From http://filianism-deanism.blogspot.co.uk/2016/12/3rd-week-of-advent.html

Rebekah aka River S – Independent Filianic

3rd Week of Advent

The third night of Advent is so bright! With this many candles lit, it looks so cosy and warm! Though this is the night that is associated with Dea Matrona on the Janite website, I am tempted to think of the first night as that of the Light Beyond the Darkness, as it is so much starker, bleaker, though that tiny bit warmer, to have a single candle lit on the mantle. With three – this seems the warmest of times already, and we have not yet gotten to full strength!

We finally got our live Yule tree yesterday! My family spent much of Rayadi busily rearranging the front room to give it the pride of place – each of us already envisioning Nativity morning when we wake up and come into the room early to see it bright and glowing before us!

This morning we were able to decorate it: a little more restrained than the imitation one we have in the family room; mostly in gold ribbon!

I’ve begun reading an interesting book: Flowers in the Mirror. It is acclaimed for being an early piece of feminist literature: a book that pled the cause of women in late 1700s Imperial China. The author Li Ju-Chen writes of Countries of Women, and places where the social order is reversed – where women take the role of men, and men take the role of women in the house to illustrate the state of society at such a time when cruelties as foot-binding were still in wide practise and women were cloistered away from the opposite sex and the outside world. So far, in its depictions of the spirit realm and the Fairy of a Hundred Flowers and all the spirits of the different flowers of the world, has been a lovely read that hits all the right points in my love for magical beings and divine realms!

I cannot yet say anything on the rest of the book, just starting it as I have, but the introduction explaining Popular Taoism at the start of the book seemed to have intriguing parallels to Filianism in my own mind, in that once Taoism took off in popularity, writers began creating stories to illustrate their faith:

A host of minor writers came into being, who were preoccupied with presenting tales of the supernatural and the miraculous in support of their faith and incorporated a mass of folklore and mythology into the religion. (A Note on Popular Taoism)

This brought to mind immediately the beautiful story that I read almost as often as I can – The Dream Key, particularly suited to this time of year. It would be a beautiful goal to write more stories, of however short a nature, of this type to enjoy amongst ourselves and share with others!

Cicely Mary Barker Christmas tree fairy

When I inherit our family “Star Fairy” a 1930s painted doll of my Mothers, I shall make sure that she wears a star ribbon headband around her forehead. I periodically replace her star wand, which I craft from paper, card and foil.

Thank you for the inspiring link to the Christmas Tree Fairy statue of Cicely Mary Barker.

2016 Update:
My heirloom star fairy is still packed in my parent’s attic and will remain so. My Dad is visiting our Scottish family for the festive period and New Years/Hogmanay.
I have purchased a Christmas Tree Fairy statue of Cicely Mary Barker from the USA, as even with postage it is more affordable than the sole one that I found in Britain!

She arrived all the way from Cumberland, Providence County, Rhode Island, United States, last week, in a gigantic box – therefore I did not realise that it was her!

I have also purchased a 925 silver locket, Christmas Tree Fairy by Cicely Mary Barker, with silver 5 pointed star underneath.

Traditions and Thealogy of the Star Fairy

From ArchMadria Pamela Lanides posts with additions by Sophia Ruth

We prepare our hearts for the coming of Our Lady through unselfish acts, devotion, contemplation, scripture readings and prayer. We cook special foods for the season. We set our homes alight with candles and colorful bulbs (which represent the Eternal Light and the Angelic powers) in the midst of the ever-growing darkness while awaiting the One Who reflects our Mother’s Light to us.

The Silver Tree/Fir Tree is symbolic of the World Tree/Axis and, in our tradition, is decorated with stars, moons and suns. It is topped with the Star Fairy with her chariot and her team of seven white horses with silver hoofs, and her train of sylphs. It is a tradition to leave bread, milk and cheese for the Star Fairy.

From Madrian member, David Kay, we read: What I have read about the Star Fairy in Madrian writings is that she visits houses on Nativity Eve to increase the sense of joy in that household, and it is customary to place some refreshment under the Nativity Fir to refresh her on her travels.

~

From The Coming Age Issue 1
118 years after Lourdes apparition of 1858
1976

“The Star-Fairy
Legend has it that throughout the period of the Advent, the sylphs of air elements travel about the period of the Advent, the sylphs or air elementals travel about the earth spreading the peace and joy of our Lady’s coming Nativity. The chief among them was always depicted as carrying a symbolic representation of the Star of Nativity, and is called the Star-Sylph or Star-Fairy. Some later traditions say that she and her followers become semi-visible on the night before Nativity-dawn, and fly in and out of every house and dwelling-place, creating presents out of the air for all who have deserved them through the year. Some have doubts about this last point, but the most sensible section of the community has always believed it – that is, the children!”

From The Coming Age Issue 17

“The Star Fairy, the bright, regal princess of the air sylph-folk, who drives her chariot abroad on Nativity Eve with its seven white horses giving presents to all who have deserved them. There was also the possibility that she might leave nothing but a rod, which our mothers by this would know that we had not been good throughout the year.”

star-fairy-lights-the-tree-candles

From Madrian traditions, it is usual for the Fir to be named (usually by the youngest child).
This is an internet found illustration of another Madrian belief: the Star Fairy always lights the tree candles for the first time.

~

Again, thanks to our sister in the Faith, Sophia Ruth, who has provided us with the following research and information:

There are those in the British Isles who still give due respect to the Fair Folk who are Elementals of Earth, Air, Water and Fire. Near a cultivated garden or field would be left a wild area for the land fairies to live, this is where water soaked bread, cake, biscuit crumbs were scattered for the Fair Folk and the wild birds.

So the Star Fairy with her magic wand in certain households, was honoured at Midwinter. Other children had tree dolls.

I (Sophia Ruth) also wrote a short note of good deeds and intentions which was held above the hearth fire and the updraft carried it up the the Star Fairy (Dea). Etymology: cheminée (chimney) is closely related to chemin (way or road). The chimney in the house is like the fontanelle in the head (the opening we have as babies that symbolically opens up to heaven) or the sun-door in the universe which is the way out of the material world to the higher realms.

~

Therefore the Deanic/Filianic tradition of the Star-Fairy was a continuation with added religious significance, the Divine Spirit entering the World through the Northern Portal.

I have just found this on Fellowship Of Isis
Juno Covella Perpetual Calendar of the Fellowship of Isis
By Lawrence Durdin-Robertson

All formatting has been retained from the original.
Goddesses appear in BOLD CAPITAL letters.

THE STAR FAIRY; THE GODDESS OF NATURE. (Doreen Valiente, ABC of Witchcraft, p. 323) on the Yuletide tree:

“With its bright, baubles and the star on the top, fir is a miniature version of World Tree of our pagan ancestors, with its roots deep in earth, the sun, moon and stars hung on its spreading branches, and the Pole Star on its topmost point. Sometimes the star is replaced by a fairy doll, who represents the goddess of Nature ruling over the world”.

(The Coming Age, No. 13) on the Yule tree: “The fir tree, with its ruler the: Star Fairy, stand always in the heart of the home”.

All legends have their beginnings, including Santa Claus. While our legend of the Star Fairy may be of more recent origin, from the above statement, we can see that this has been a long-standing tradition with some families in the British Isles.

The Christmas Tree Fairy

The little Christmas tree was born
And dwelt in open air;
It did not guess how bright a dress
Someday it’s boughs would wear;
Brown cones were all, it thought, a tall
And grown-up Fir would bear.

O little Fir! Your forest home
is far and far away;
And here indoors these boughs of yours
With coloured balls are gay,
With candle-light, and tinsel bright
For this is Christmas Day

A dolly-fairy stands on top, Till children sleep, then she
(A live one now!) from bough to bough
Goes gliding silently.
O magic sight, this joyous night!
O laden, sparkling tree!

Oh, Thank you, Ruth! You have found the Star Fairy of my paternal ancestors! (Lorraine). I will add this to a new post. Thank you. This information will also be nice to have for MidSummer’s Eve and the Feast of the Fairies.

Within The Night

within-the-night

ArchMatrona Georgia found this internet graphic.

Goddess Mother of love and light,

Stand with us within the night.

Free our souls of grief and pain,

That love shall be our truest gain.

Together let our love now blend,

For unto all a peace we shall send.

Goddess Mother of love and light,

You hold our hearts in love this night.
