Tonight is Mother’s Night, a native European Tradition as well as a Christian Tradition (when it was moved to Christmas Eve.) How appropriate that the candle of the Celestial Mother, as the Rose of Joy, be lit on this night, the night of Her Joy, the night of our Joy.

Tonight, on the eve of the solstice, the Daughter of Light, She Who is the Daughter of the Supernal Sun, will shine as the Midnight Star of Wonder;  the Star of Hope.

As we wait with the Holy Mother, we might offer Her incense and flowers, milk and honey, a rosary, hymns, special prayers or the Rite of Sacrifice (priestesses shall also serve the liturgy on Daughter’s Day/Yule). We also light the last candle on our Sunwheel.

The Red Candle also signifies the Sacred Season of Summer; the direction of South, the time of Noon, the Symbol of the Rose and Madria Vicka. The Sacred Mystery is Assumption. (The Holy Mother is the Assumption of our Souls when our incarnations are complete.)

28. The last princess possessed only but few of the worldly things, but she was a priestess of Thea, and she praised Her in the morning and at evening and at all the seven hours of the day. Her crown was made from glittering crystal; and as she took it from her head the light of the star fell upon it, and she was bathed in rays of a thousand different colours, and the children of the earth drew in their breath at the sight of its beauty. 29 And she laid it at the feet of the archangel. 30. The archangel said: “It is good that you bring your crown, for you are a true and loving priestess and a servant of your people, but the holy child shall be priestess of all the world, and shall serve Her children even to the last and greatest service.”

31. When the archangel ceased to speak, a new voice filled the air, more beautiful and more formidable than hers. The voice said:

“Her name shall be called Kore,
for She shall be the Lady of heaven.”

32. Then the star vanished from the sky and yet its light remained; then the shape of the light became a vision: 33. it was a vision of the Mistress of All Things, bearing in Her arms the holy child. 34. For all the wondrous things the children of earth had seen that night, not the whole of them was one thousandth part as wondrous as this vision.

35. Then for twelve nights the star returned to the sky; and on the thirteenth night it did not return. And this was a sign of things that were to come.

Today, we light the Blue Candle of Peace in honor of the Holy Daughter as Dea, Dove of Peace.  The Blue Candle also signifies the Sacred Season of Spring, the direction of East, the time of Dawn, the Symbol of the Dove and Madria Grace. The Mystery is Aurora, the New Dawn (of All Life).

13. When the voice of the archangel ceased, a silence fell that was the first true silence since the beginning of the world, and the last that shall be until its end, 14. and the children of earth watched the sky as the first rays of dawn crept across the heavens. 15. Then a cry issued out of the cave, saying: “The holy child is born from the most holy Mother; light has come forth from light, perfection from perfection.” 16. At once the air was filled with the daughters of heaven, and the sky was ablaze with the radiance of their joy, 17. and they sang aloud to the glory of Thea. 18. When the shining ones ceased from their song, the world became quiet again, and the star grew brighter and ever brighter, until it shone brighter than the radiance of all the host of heaven; and yet its light was so gentle that the eyes of earth’s children were not dazzled, 19. and the colour of the light was not one of the seven, but a wondrous luminescence not known within the boundaries of the world.

Filianic Advent Candles – 3rd Week!

3rd Week of Advent

The third night of Advent is so bright! With this many candles lit, it looks so cosy and warm! Though this is the night that is associated with Dea Matrona on the Janite website, I am tempted to think of the first night as that of the Light Beyond the Darkness, as it is so much starker, bleaker, though that tiny bit warmer, to have a single candle lit on the mantle. With three – this seems the warmest of times already, and we have not yet gotten to full strength!

We finally got our live Yule tree yesterday! My family spent much of Rayadi busily rearranging the front room to give it the pride of place – each of us already envisioning Nativity morning when we wake up and come into the room early to see it bright and glowing before us!

This morning we were able to decorate it: a little more restrained than the imitation one we have in the family room; mostly in gold ribbon!

I’ve begun reading an interesting book: Flowers in the Mirror. It is acclaimed for being an early piece of feminist literature: a book that pled the cause of women in late 1700s Imperial China. The author Li Ju-Chen writes of Countries of Women, and places where the social order is reversed – where women take the role of men, and men take the role of women in the house to illustrate the state of society at such a time when cruelties as foot-binding were still in wide practise and women were cloistered away from the opposite sex and the outside world. So far, in its depictions of the spirit realm and the Fairy of a Hundred Flowers and all the spirits of the different flowers of the world, has been a lovely read that hits all the right points in my love for magical beings and divine realms!

I cannot yet say anything on the rest of the book, just starting it as I have, but the introduction explaining Popular Taoism at the start of the book seemed to have intriguing parallels to Filianism in my own mind, in that once Taoism took off in popularity, writers began creating stories to illustrate their faith:

A host of minor writers came into being, who were preoccupied with presenting tales of the supernatural and the miraculous in support of their faith and incorporated a mass of folklore and mythology into the religion. (A Note on Popular Taoism)

This brought to mind immediately the beautiful story that I read almost as often as I can – The Dream Key, particularly suited to this time of year. It would be a beautiful goal to write more stories, of however short a nature, of this type to enjoy amongst ourselves and share with others!

Sunwheel – The Violet Candle of Faith

Today, within the Divine Life Cycle, we honor Mysteria, the Great Mother, as the Veiled Fora of Faith. She is known in both the Janite and Lucienne communities as Dea Matrona, which means the Great Mother Goddess (Great Mother God). “The Gaulish theonym (which should be theanym, in this case) Mātr-on-ā signifies “great mother.”

The title, Matrona, comes from the Goddess, Dea Matrona (1)  for whom the river, Marne, was named (in ancient times it was called the Matrona river). She is Absolute Deity, the Dark beyond the light and the Light beyond the darkness. 

The Violet candle also signifies the Season of Moura, the direction of Center, the time of the Dark Hour before the Dawn, the Fora and Madrias Candre, Theia and Rhea. The Mystery is Moura which encompasses the Descent of the Holy Daughter and as Madria Erin of the Auroran Tradition so aptly phrased it, The Divine Shattering. (2)

Today, on our Sunwheel, we light the Yellow Candle of Hope in honor of the Holy Daughter, Kore. (Kor-a, which means Maiden.) The Mystery which it represents is the Winter Mystery of the Nativity. Unlike the Christ of Christianity, the Holy Daughter did not incarnate as an human being here on Earth, rather, in the manner of the Divine Sophia, She emanated from the Celestial Mother and took on the rarefied Form of Soul. This is the Mystery which we celebrate on Daughter’s Day/Yule.

The Yellow Candle of Hope also represents Winter, North, Air, Midnight, the North Star and Madria Sofia.

Sunna Daughter Goddess Sunna

Mother’s Night/Daughter’s Day is an old Norse Tradition for whom the day is celebrated in honor of the young Goddess, Sunna; Sol being her mother. (1)

Mother’s Night was also celebrated by the Anglo-Saxons in honor of the Matronae/Matres, the pan-European Triple Mothers. (2) The idea of Mother’s Night has been retained as a tradition, in many parts of European Christianity, but the night has been transferred from Yule Eve to Christmas Eve, as it is now celebrated in honor of the Virgin Mary.

The candle is lit before dinner or early evening, followed by a brief scripture reading and prayers on Sunnadi.

Sophia Ruth used a favourite English nursery  rhyme from her childhood. Now I understand the traveler means the soul incarnated. Diamond in the Madrian Geniae correspondences are Sun and Theia therefore as a diamond star, it symbolically suggests to me our Holy Mother and Her Holy Daughter being one, as in the Scripture above.

The first candle to be lit is the Green candle of Wisdom. This candle represents the First Mystery of the Celestial Mother, Mari; She Who is the Creatrix and Matrix of all Being. She is Supernal Wisdom. (Mari is pronounced: Mar as in Mars, i as in ee. The emphasis is on the first syllable.)

The Green candle of Wisdom is also representative of Fall, West, Earth, Twilight, the Apple of Wisdom and Madria Thema.

The candle is lit before dinner or early evening, followed by a the brief scripture reading and prayers on Sunnadi. We will continue to light the Green candle each evening of the week, although the same scripture reading and prayers are not necessary. A devotee may say a brief prayer, in their own words, for the candle lighting during the remainder of the week. The candle is extinguished after the evening meal.

Filianic Advent Candles!

I said it already on my stitching blog, but here it is again – it has been Yuletide since November 1st for me. I woke up the morning after Halloween, and everything said “Yuletide”: the weather, the anticipation already starting to crackle in the air, the early posts on social media or the music in stores – I have been happily enjoying the festive season nearly a full month now!

So to bring this winter-y feeling more fully into view, I decided this would be the year we had advent candles. This year found me with a lot of candles on hand from fantastic finds in local thrift stores, so I had some to choose from right away; my Mother has plenty of candle holders on hand and a new runner for the mantelpiece; and my sister’s birthday celebrations yesterday took us to a Michael’s store where I picked up two frosty branches to finish off the setting. It turned out beautifully!!

The traditional colours for Advent candles are several: all purple, all blue, all white, or three purple/blue and one pink, some with a white candle in the middle. Each candle has meanings depending on the colour, when they are lit in the Advent season, and where they are in the wreath; and most of these meanings change depending on the church and denomination lighting them. They were in use with pre-Christian Germanic peoples, and became incorporated with the Christian church by 1600.

For me, I didn’t have any blue or purple candles, but I did have lovely white tapers, a handful of pink – and a beautiful gold. I like the meanings of hope, love, joy, and peace for each of them, with the gold candle on Nativity for the birth of the Daughter. I’ll probably light them from the outside first – hope and peace on the white – then love and joy on the pink in the middle as the last two Mondays of Advent so I work my way in towards the Daughter candle for Nativity.

Advent begins next week – one candle a week for the four weeks leading up to Christmas. I checked the Calendar over on Google Calendars, courtesy of Race MoChridhe, and in the Daughters of Shining Harmony, and the weeks this year do indeed begin on Mondays, or Candredi for Sai Candre, so one candle will be lit in the evening on Monday next week, the first of Astraea, around dinner time; then two the following Monday, etc. The gold candle will be lit on the eve of Nativity, as the light of the Daughter is born.

I will be eagerly looking forward to the promised posts on Nativity and Advent practices on the Janite Order’s blog, and – once I get the last of my homework out of the way (just two classes in the term left!) – working on the prayers and readings I will have during this season!

Until the first night of Advent, I do have some more Scripture images in the works: the cover images for each of the chapters of the Minor Scriptures are nearly finished, and I’ve begun some work with the actual verses; look to see those posted soon on Facebook; and then there are images to create for the holiday season as well, which I can hardly wait to get started on!
